I have now learned to ignore that voice, and I wear whatever I want, so I’d describe my style as ‘liberated’

Thom Rylance, the charismatic frontman of the acclaimed indie-pop band The Lottery Winners, has a story that resonates far beyond the stage. Known for their infectious melodies and honest lyrics, Thom has led the band to widespread success, including a number one album. We caught up with Thom to discuss his "liberated" approach to dressing and the undeniable connection between music and personal expression.

How would you describe your personal style?

That’s an interesting question. People say I dress well, and I hope I do, because I LOVE clothes and fashion, but I’ve spent so much of my life thinking ‘oh, I love that but I couldn’t possibly wear it, because I’m too fat’.  I have now learned to ignore that voice, and I wear whatever I want, so I’d describe my style as ‘liberated’.

What are your three style essentials that you think every person needs in their wardrobe?

I feel like shoes are so essential to an outfit. I’m very judgmental about shoes, which is probably an awful thing to say. So, I’d say a good pair of boots, is my first one.

A great, staple, great fitting jacket. Leather or denim maybe. And a pair of jeans that make you feel sexy.

What do you like most about PHIX?

I love the vintage cuts and collars, blended with modern elements. I think it’s honestly one of the coolest and most interesting brands around today. And the quality is premium, which means you’ll keep it forever. None of that disposable fashion.

Best gig you’ve ever been to?

If I can’t pick my own, I saw Radiohead at a big outdoor gig in Edinburgh when I was about 16 or something. It was a transformative experience. They played Paranoid Android and as he sang the ‘rain down on me’ lyric, the heavens opened above us, like it had been planned by the music gods. I cried my stupid eyes out.

One piece of clothing you can’t live without?

For me it’s my glasses. I like to experiment with different shapes and colours, and they’ve probably become part of my identity. Also, literally can’t live without them, because I’d crash my car and stuff.

What’s your proudest clothing purchase?

ADHD and impulsivity means that I accidentally make very proud purchases quite a lot, but tonight I’m going to a film premiere, and I’m wearing a lovely Phix shirt, and it has literally made my outfit.

Is there anything you regret wearing? Why?

Oh gosh, yeah. Scroll back a few years and it’s all mainly awful. Skinny jeans and lots of tweed. I thought I was Morrissey.

We’re really inspired by music history at PHIX. What is a song you can listen to on repeat?

God Only Knows by The Beach Boys.

Who has inspired your style the most? / Style icon?

There’s so many, but because I watched a documentary about him last night, there really isn’t many people cooler than Elvis Presley.

‘A good outfit can really Phix your mood’. - Thom Rylance
