The classic Cuban collar shirt is a key style in our SS19 collection, reworked in unique retro and animal prints. The Cuban shirt silhouette first appeared as a working-class men’s staple in 18th Century South America and the Caribbean islands, with the looser, boxy fit ideal for working outdoors in the heat. Traditionally, the shirt was made from light-coloured fabrics and had a straight fit. It featured practical pockets as it was meant to be worn untucked and open at the neck, with a tapered double-notched lapel-style collar.
We’ve taken this traditional relaxed fit and imbued it with our love of music, creating the Music Note Cuban Shirt. The unconventional black colourway and subtle music note print gives this shirt a real edge, whilst the lightweight fabric and statement open collar maintain the core Cuban shirt style, and make the piece perfect for summer weather.
The Cuban shirt became a menswear fashion essential by the 1950s in mainland USA. Hawaiian and bowling shirts became all the rage, and the king of rock ‘n’ roll himself, Elvis, was partial to a Cuban. The Cuban shirt symbolised leisure, relaxation, and the fun of summertime, with bold colours and summery prints being a key take on the style at this time. We’ve captured this retro nostalgia and the heat of summertime with our sixties twist on the Cuban - the Strawberry Fields Cuban Collar Shirt. This piece features our popular, exclusive Strawberry Fields print and a contrast revere collar. Billy Huxley styles his with a casual black suit and aviator sunglasses.
In the seventies, shirt collars got even bolder. Inspired by 1970s statement collars and emerging rock ‘n’ roll culture, we’ve put a new twist on the classic Cuban by incorporating animal prints, metallic skull buttons and darker colours. The lightweight casual style of our Arizona, Maddox and Snakeskin Cuban Shirts make them perfect for gigs. Throw on a leather or suede jacket for cool evenings, and wear tapered trousers or slim fit jeans to offset the boxy shirt fit. When it comes to styling, our Cuban collar shirts can be worn either untucked for an effortless look, or tucked in for a more formal appearance; You could also roll the sleeves for an added retro detail.
Our Cuban collar shirts can be layered and worn unbuttoned over a vest or tee, for that relaxed Americana beach-casual style. The Unidentified Rocker styles his Colorado Cuban Shirt, which features our exclusive ‘Smoking Hand’ motif, with a white t-shirt underneath. The motif print and dark colours give this piece an overtly modern twist on a classic shirt shape.
Alternatively, our Cuban collar shirts can be worn under a two piece suit. Style it with the shirt collar over the lapels for a unique take on a usually formal look.
Whilst not your typical Cuban with it’s long sleeved design and more structured fit, our Arabella Shirt features a seventies statement Cuban-style collar and a double pocketed design, reminiscent of early traditional Cuban shirts. This piece is made from premium lightweight white cotton, making it the perfect summer shirt, and is inspired heavily by the bold style of musicians like David Bowie and Alex Turner.
